Singapore will get a new mufti next year when the present longest serving mufti Syed Isa bin Mohamed Semait, retires on Dec 31.
The Singapore Islamic Religious Council said Syed Isa, 72, would be replaced by his deputy Mohamed Fatris bin Bakaram, 40, beginning Jan 1.
In a statement here, the council said following his retirement, Syed Isa, who began serving as the republic’s mufti since 1972, would serve in a consultative capacity as Advisor to the Office of the Mufti.
A graduate from Eygpt’s Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Mohamed Fatris, who became the deputy mufti since 2004, also holds a master’s degree in administration and educational management from Malaysia’s International Islamic University.
