Singapore Democrats
The Young Democrats (YD) have been invited to attend Inter-Capitol Youth Conference organised by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
YD Honorary Secretary Mr Jarrod Luo and Program Director Mr Muhd Khalis have been selected by the conference committee to be among 60 participants, aged between 18-35, from the various ASEAN members to take part in the event held in Jakarta, Indonesia from 12-15 Dec 10.
Themed “Building Global Partnerships Toward Developing and ASEAN Community 2015” will discuss, among other topics, how youths and youth organisations can come together to cooperate and build towards goals set out by ASEAN.
Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, who is also the current chair of ASEAN, will give the opening speech at the conference.
One of the topics the YD representatives will be the need for ASEAN governments to protect and respect the human rights of their citizens as laid out in the ASEAN Human Rights Mechanism adopted in 2009.
The selection of the SDP’s YD to participate in the conference is testament to the development of the party’s youth wing in recent years. Its members have been invited by governments and organisations all across the world to attend workshops, election observation missions, and internships.
The Singapore Democrats place much emphasis on such events as they are valuable opportunities for our youth members to gain exposure and develop their leadership qualities.
In the years to come they will be in a good position to assume leadership roles within the party. Singapore will be the ultimate beneficiaries. We continue to see young Singaporeans coming forward to join the YD which continues to witness robust growth.
