Singapore will enforce the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction (HCCAICA) which it acceded last Dec 28, beginning March 1.
The city-state’s community development, youth and sports ministry said today it had formed a central authority to implement its obligation under the convention.
In a statement on Tuesday, the ministry said the Foreign Affairs Ministry of the Netherlands, the depositary of the Hague Conventions, had confirmed that the HCCAICA would enter into force for Singapore on the date.
The convention aims to protect children from the harmful effects of abduction and retention across international boundaries when the child is taken away by a parent to another jurisdiction without the consent of the other parent.
It will also provide an avenue for their prompt return and resolution of trans-border custodial disputes.
So far, 84 countries have acceded to the convention.
The ministry said, acceding to the convention was in line with Singapore’s commitment to protect the best interests of the child involved.
