Singapore Democrats
The Singapore Democrats are stepping up our efforts to reach out to the community – this time our youths – by organising a futsal tournament. We will be hosting the SDP Futsal Carnival 2011, an event jointly organised by our Community Services and Ground Operations Subcommittees.
The competition, aimed at engaging Singaporean youths, is the first of its kind in Singapore. It is open to teams made up of under-23 players who will vie for the SDP Challenge Trophy.
Futsal, a variant of football played indoors or on smaller artificial pitches, is popular among the younger generation. To be held on 1 Oct 11 at the KickersBay@Indian Association at Balestier Road from 2pm to 7pm the competition will bring together 12 teams of nine players each (6 players and 3 reserves).
Dr Vincent Wijeysingha who co-facilitates the Community Services Subcommittee feels that such an event is timely given that many youths in Singapore tend to be disengaged from society.
“It’s disheartening to see the potential of our younger people being unfulfilled because of the rigidity of our system,” he said. “Youths are a vital part of a nation’s future and the more they are involved with national issues, the better off society is.”
The SDP will be fielding a team from our Young Democrats.
Before registering, please read the rules and regulations governing the tournament here. Teams can register by completing the forms here by 29 Sep 11. If you have questions, please email us at sdp@yoursdp.org.
On yes, the competition will also feature a knock-down, drawn-out, no-holds-barred (exhibition) match between our Seniors and Women Democrats. The game will highlight our hitherto unheralded footballing talent. So mark the date on your calendar, it’s an event you won’t want to miss.
