Join us for the Football Carnival this Saturday

Singapore Democrats

This Saturday will see the Singapore Democrats host a football carnival featuring teams from around the island that will compete for the SDP Challenge Trophy.

Several teams have signed up for the competition which will take place at Kickersbay@Indian Association at Balestier Road on 1 Oct 11 from 2pm to 7 pm. This event is yet another first by the SDP and we look forward to it becoming an annual affair.

The tournament is jointly organised by the Community Services and GO! (Ground Operations) subcommittees of the party. We hope to reach out further to Singaporeans through one of the most popular sports in the country. Football is a game that has a great appeal to Singaporeans across the demographic and we want to get to know Singaporeans better through it.

The matches, more commonly called futsal, will be played on a reduced-size pitch with smaller goalposts. The teams will be divided into two groups which will play a round-robin league. The top two teams in each group will face off in the semi-finals and finals.

The champion team will walk away with the SDP Challenge Trophy and players from the 1st and 2nd runner-ups will also be awarded wnners’ medals.

Apart from the competition there will also be exhibition matches between the Women Democrats, our seniors’ team and a couple of women teams who have signed up for the carnival.

Come see Dr Wong Wee Nam terrorise the opposing camp with his speed and power, Dr Vincent Wijeysingha dazzle with his sublime dribbling sklls and Dr Ang Yong Guan weave his magic on the astroturf. What about Dr James Gomez’s agility in front of goal and our banana-and-bicycle kick specialist, Mr Alec Tok?

The guys have been training hard and has vowed that they will go all out and prevent the WD from winning by more than three goals!

Yes, that’s how strong our WD team is. If you haven’t seen the likes of Chee Siok Chin, Michelle Lee and Jaslyn Go take to field, then you haven’t seen futsal at its best. We will also be showcasing some of our newer and younger talent who have recently joined us.

Among some of the teams registered for the tournament are: FC Fushan Warriors, Cheetahs, Team Guragas, Paix, F. Square, Red Alert, Turtle, Black Is Back!, and Galacticos. Two teams from the SDP’s Young Democrats will also be taking part in the competition. In addition, two women teams have also signed up: Fireflames A and Fireflames B.

So make your way down to Kickersbay with your family and friends and join us for some great football and lots of fun! All are welcome and admission is free.
