Lee and Goh silent on Chee’s proposed debt settlement

Singapore Democrats

It has been one-and-a-half months since Dr Chee Soon Juan made his offer of $30,000 to settle his debt to Mr Lee Kuan Yew and Mr Goh Chok Tong to clear his bankruptcy so that he can be eligible for the next elections.$CUT$

But Messrs Lee and Goh have kept mum about the offer. The Official Assignee said in an email three weeks ago that she would convey the offer to the two former prime ministers and that she would inform Dr Chee if they responded.

As of the writing of this report, Mr Lee and Mr Goh have not responded.

“All I want is for them to say yes or no to my offer,” Dr Chee said. “If they accept it, I will do the necessary to get them the money. If not, they should make a counter-proposal and we can work from there. But I need an answer in order to move forward.”

Dr Chee is raising funds by selling his book Democratically Speaking. Copies can been purchased online here. The book is published in two editions: Hardcover ($50) and paperback ($30).

Bookstores are also selling it. In fact, Kinokuniya and Times are doing brisk business with the book. Kinokuniya has already made three re-orders of the book since its launch one month ago and Times has made one re-order.

Dr Chee has also been personally selling the book at Raffles Place and will continue to do so. Please check the SDP Facebook for dates and times.

He said: “I want to thank all those who have bought the book. While I am raising funds to clear my bankruptcy, my overriding concern is for Singaporeans to read the book and keep themselves informed about the future direction of our country and perils of continuing with a one-party state.”

The book is also available at Select Books which will do a meet-the-author session with Dr Chee soon. Details of the event will be announced shortly.

Dear Ms Lydia Loh,

I refer to your email dated 17 August 2012.

In it, you said that you would convey my debt settlement proposal to all my creditors, and will keep me informed when you receive my creditors’ responses and their counter-proposals.

It has been almost three weeks and I would be grateful if you could let me know whether Mr Lee Kuan Yew and Mr Goh Chok Tong have responded to my offer of $30,000 of debt settlement and, if they haven’t, apprise me of what IPTO is doing to assist the process.

Thank you.

Chee Soon Juan
