During our rounds at the Holland-Bukit Timah GRC, we spoke to a resident who informed us that when he called the constituency’s Town Council to find out when a broken-down lift would be repaired, he was advised to look for the sub-contractor responsible for the lift maintenance.
According to the resident, the lift at Blk 150 Petir Road had not been repaired since it broke down in June this year – a period of more than two months. The SDP has yet to verify this statement.
We were also informed that the remaining lift in the block had also stopped working during the period, causing residents to have to use the stairs.
“Very disappointed with the MP in my area,” one resident said, “we need an alternative MP to speak up for us.”
This was not all, residents also told us that cleaners were seen washing the walls and exterior of the lift the same day when Professor Paul Tambyah and other SDP members visited the housing estate. His opponent and the area’s MP, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, was coincidentally also visiting the same block that day. Flyers, banners and posters announced his visit.
Prof Tambyah was one of the SDP candidates in the 2015 GE. One of the residents informed him that there was another mailer which had said that the lift had been repaired.
If the lift at Blk 150 had, in fact, been in a state of disrepair for more than two months until Dr Balakrishnan’s visit, the question to ask is: Is the TC serving the residents of Holland-Bukit Timah or Dr Balakrishnan?
