In a turn of event, the Deputy Public Prosecutor decided to replace previous citations on Mr Gopalan Nair with a charge under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act. He is now out on a $5,000 bail and is required to appear in the Subordinate Court 23 on 12 June for a hearing, including the prospect of facing additional charges.

A former Singaporean now an American, Nair was earlier charged with “insulting a public servant” based on two emails he allegedly sent to the Attorney General and the Solicitor General, which Nair denied. However, he did not deny that he had written strong criticisms of the Singapore establishment on his blog.

Nair is represented by Mr Chia Ti Lik.
