Relatives of Singapore’s most-wanted terrorist, Mas Selamat Kastari, have been jailed for helping him to remain at large after his escape from prison in February 2008, the city-state’s home affairs minister said Monday.

Singapore accused Indonesian-born Mas Selamat, who has been handed back to the city-state after being caught in Malaysia in April 2009, of being a leader of the terrorist network Jemaah Islamiyah and of plotting to hijack a plane and crash it into Singapore’s airport.

Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam on Monday told parliament that last week Mas Selamat’s brother, Asmom, his wife Aisah and their daughter Nur Aini had been sentenced to 12 months, 3 months and 18 months in jail, respectively, for sheltering the fugitive and helping him to elude a massive manhunt.

The minister did not reveal how the suspected terrorist eventually made his way to Malaysia, saying ‘the account given by Mas Selamat is still subject to verification.’

Mas Selamat’s escape from a high security prison caused huge embarrassment to Singapore’s authorities, who proved unable to hold their most-wanted terrorist safe and track him down in the tiny island state.
