Sign petitions at conference

Two petitions will be put up for signatures at the International Youth Conference for Democracy on 26 July 2003. All participants are encouraged to sign the petitions which will be delivered to the Singapore and Burmese governments.

Meanwhile, registrants continue to flow in. Singaporeans of all age groups are welcome to attend. Admission is free and everyone is welcome to attend. The conference will take place at the Esplanade Room (4th Floor) of the Carlton Hotel, 76 Bras Basah Road.

PETITION

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, ASSEMBLED AT THE INTERNATIONAL YOUTH CONFERENCE FOR DEMOCRACY IN SINGAPORE ON 26 JULY 2003, CALL UPON THE GOVERNMENT OF SINGAPORE TO GIVE FULL RECOGNITION TO THE HUMAN RIGHTS OF ITS PEOPLE AND TO ACCORD THEM THE MACHINERY TO REDRESS THE VIOLATION OF THEIR HUMAN RIGHTS.

WE ALSO CALL UPON THE GOVERNMENT OF SINGAPORE TO ACCEDE TO AND RATIFY WITHOUT ANY FURTHER DELAY: –

1. THE INTERNATIONAL COVENANT ON ECONOMIC, SOCIAL AND CULTURAL RIGHTS ADOPTED BY THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION OF 16 DECEMBER 1966;

2. THE INTERNATIONAL COVENANT ON CIVIL AND POLITICAL RIGHTS ADOPTED BY THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY RESOLUTION OF 16 DECEMBER 1966 AND

3. THE CONVENTION AGAINST TORTURE AND OTHER CRUEL, INHUMAN OR DEGRADING TREATMENT OR PUNISHMENT, 1984.

PETITION

WE, THE UNDERSIGNED, ASSEMBLED AT THE INTERNATIONAL YOUTH CONFERENCE FOR DEMOCRACY IN SINGAPORE ON 26 JULY 2003, CONDEMN THE VIOLENT ATTACKS ON AUNG SAN SUU KYI AND OTHER DEMOCRACY ACTIVISTS IN BURMA.

WE FURTHER DEMOUNCE HER ARREST AS WELL AS THE DETENTION OF HER SUPPORTERS AND LEADERS AND MEMBERS OF THE NATIONAL LEAGUE FOR DEMOCRACY.

WE CALL UPON THE STATE PEACE AND DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL OF BURMA TO:

1. IMMEDIATELY RELEASE AUNG SAN SUU KYI AND ALL THOSE PRESENTLY IMPRISONED;

2. TAKE MEASURES TO INSTITUTE DEMOCRATIC CHANGE IN BURMA WITHOUT FURTHER DELAY;

3. GUARANTEE THE HUMAN RIGHTS OF ALL BURMESE PEOPLE.
