The SDP’s women’s wing will organise a public forum on 3 March 2012, Saturday, to mark International Women’s Day (IWD). IWD is commemorated annually on 8 March where thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate their achievements.

In Singapore the Women Democrats (WD) of the Singapore Democratic Party will host its first ever forum entitled What Women
Really Want. It will feature a panel of women speakers both from the party as well as civil society.

The forum will cover a wide range of issues relating to women’s role in society. It will also highlight the dearth of women in Singapore’s politics and examine the issues that prevent greater participation of women in the local political scene. Among the speakers are:

  • Ms Chong Wai Fung, member of Women Democrats and healthcare researcher/analyst
  • Sister Delphine Kang, counsellor at the local mission school
  • Ms Dana Lam, former president of the Association of Women for Action and Research
  • Ms Hazel Poa, secretary-general of the National Solidarity Party
  • Ms Suraya Akbar, member of Women Democrats and businesswoman

The SDP wants to see its women members play a leading role within the party and, in time to come, at the national level. The party has seen a surge in the number of women joining our ranks and we are hopeful that by the next general elections, we will be able to field outstanding women candidates.

Heading the WD is Central Executive Committee member Ms Chee Siok Chin who continues to drive the women’s wing forward. She said: “I’m excited about the new crop of women coming into the party and I am confident we can play a meaningful role in Singapore’s politics and beyond.”

So come join us for a rich and open discussion at the forum.
