Dear Dr Chee Soon Juan,

Thank you so much for speaking out against the use of the death penalty in Singapore. Your comments, reported in Australia, on the archaic nature of such a punishment being incongruous with a modern economy and society such as Singapore were well made.

I urge you to continue to speak out, and particularly to do everything you can to persuade the Singaporean Cabinet to grant clemency to Mr Nguyen Tuong Van, an Australian citizen currently awaiting execution by hanging.

Thank you again.
