Founded in 1980, the SDP is a social liberal democratic party which champions democracy, social justice, and the rights of the nation’s citizenry and those who call the country home.
We are committed to advocating for a more open and inclusive society where the voices of all citizens are heard and respected. The Party focuses on key issues such as cost of living, public housing, healthcare, education, mental health, climate change, and economic fairness; striving to build a nation where prosperity is shared and everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
Our history and leadership
The SDP was constituted on 6 August 1980. Its founding secretary-general was Chiam See Tong. In 1991, the Party saw a major political breakthrough when three of its candidates were elected to Parliament - Chiam, Ling How Doong, and Cheo Chai Chen.
Unfortunately, Ling and Cheo lost their seats in the 1997 elections due to political in-fighting with Chiam, who left the SDP to form another party.
Since then, the Party has grown and continues to thrive under the leadership of Dr Chee Soon Juan, its current Secretary-General.
The Party is also governed by the Central Executive Committee (CEC), members of which are elected by a body of Cadre Members once every two years. The CEC is responsible for the overall stewardship of the party - from managing party operations to running election campaigns.
As a party that prides itself on being constructive, competent, and compassionate, we aim to give Singaporeans a meaningful alternative to our country’s future through thoughtful, robust, and people-centred policies.
The SDP was the first opposition party in Singapore to develop a comprehensive and detailed set of alternative policies addressing a wide range of issues concerning our nation and people.
We seek to empower citizens through greater transparency, accountability, and public participation in governance; and remain dedicated to advancing meaningful reforms that enhance the quality of life for all Singaporeans.
Our Vision
To build a Singapore where the people are free and bold, with a strong sense of achievement tempered by an equally fierce regard for compassion and justice.
Our Values
Politics is not about self-glorification. Neither is it about enriching ourselves. Rather, it is about speaking up against an all-powerful, uncaring, and elitist ruling party.
We believe in justice and freedom, in giving everyone the opportunity to succeed; not just the rich.
We believe in giving the voiceless a voice, empowering the powerless, and a fair system where all of us are equal, prosperous and happy.
We believe in progress that is measured by our happiness and quality of life, not just material gain; one where people come before profits, rights before riches, and wisdom before wealth.
Through the years, the PAP has attacked us relentlessly. But we remain undeterred. We press on. Perhaps, this is why Singaporeans say that we are pah see boh zhao.
It is with this never-say-die, can-do spirit that we continue to serve our country, and serve it with pride and humility. It is in this spirit – the spirit that points the way forward – that we invite you, dear Singaporeans, to build a brighter, more hopeful tomorrow with us.
If our philosophy, position and values resonate with you, join our quest to influence and inspire change for the nation, fellow Singaporeans, and all who call Singapore home.
